how to plan a holiday

Here are a few quick and basic steps to ensure you have planned your holiday well;

DURATION-
this is the first step into planning a vacation - the number of days you have in hand.
once you have figured this out, can you go on the next steps of planning.
a long duration means you can reach out to the farther locations. having days less than a week would probably restrict you to in and around your country.

DESTINATION-
now this is the toughest part - deciding on a destination!!
once you have your duration in mind, you know if you can go to a far off place or nearby.

start with the kind of holiday you want - beach, mountains, monuments, city, countryside, cruise, etc.
once you have zeroed in on the kind of place you want to go, hit the internet and see the best locations/ destinations for your lookout.
for example, for a scuba diving vacation, you would want to go to Cairns, Thailand or Andaman Islands, India.

what i suggest is for you to keep an image/ view of a place clear in your mind and that will hep you finalise your destination.

time of the year makes or breaks the holiday-
if you plan to visit the beach during the rainy season or you head to the desert in the peak summers, you're likely to regret your decision and end up staying indoors.
make sure you see what is the ideal time to visit a destination.
i would also add that the prices during peak seasons are sky rocketing but for this you can plan the holiday well in advance or just around the beginning or the end of the season.
at the same time if you want to head for a spa holiday or some sort of a treatment experience, then off season will help you with your budget!
so plan wisely.

what do you want form holiday (experience)
let me start this with an example;
if you want to just relax then you should head to a resort and not get out until your check out time.
if you want to see a city, then don't stay at a luxury resort. you wouldnt enjoy the resort as you would be busy sightseeing.

the various experiences can be bundled into one holiday with only and only correct planning.
i personally do not try and bumble up too many things to do into one holiday. now if you are going to the americas from asia, you probably would want to do it all in one holiday, but then you need to make sure you have the days in your hand or else you would be the jack of all without enjoying any one place to the fullest. instead, if days in hand are critical for the size of destination, either choose a destination nearby or go to a far off destination but limit your travel time in and around that destination.
do not go to USA for 5 days and plan to do west coast, east coast and new york all in it, the only memory you will have at the end will be the leg pains and photographs.

BUDGET-
once you have the above mentioned things in control, now you need to include your budget. i have purposely put budget after the destination and duration because of the vast ocean of options we have today to reach a destination.
your budget will decide your ;
Means of travel
kind of stay you choose
kind of meals you choose
the adventures/sites you experience
and literally everything and anything!

keep in mind to consider in this is one's currency exchange rate.

number of people
larger the group, cheaper the holiday! also, larger the group, limited or no flexibility of plans!
travelling in a group is way cheaper - you share the travel cost specially when taking local transport, your meals are cheaper, group booking options are available for stay, food, touring and almost anything and everything.

TICKETS-
depending on your budget, you will choose you means of travel. once decided, one should not delay in booking your tickets at the earliest.
in the month of Jan 2015, new delhi to London tickets varied from 34000 INR to 77000 INR for British Airways economy class. that is the range the prices vary!
do research ticket prices one various websites or counters before booking.
if you can travel by road and have time in hand, choosing a train or bus  journey over flights can prove money saving and much more interesting and enriching.

STAY-
stay is directly related to what you want to do at the destination. always stay near your points of interest.
this saves you a lot of money and travel time.
there are several websites that offer great deals for stay these days.
one recommendation : always look at reviews beofer you book.
always plan your stay which has easy access to public transport such as a metro station.
here again if you want to stay in a particular area, do book well in advance as weekends and peak seasons get the rates up to the roof!

TRAVELLING LOCALLY-
travelling locally can be a task if you do not understand the local language. quiet often one hears stories of cab drivers cheating tourists with either over charging or taking around to random locations.
its best to choose the mode of transport chosen by the masses such as local busses or metro. in case this isn't your choice, make sure you have a map in your phone and have an estimate calculation of the distance versus the charge for that country.
hotels usually charge higher rates for providing transport but they are trustworthy and one can be stress free.
if you plan to visit multiple locations in one day, its best to choose a cab for the full day instead of wasting time and energy finding means to head to the next location.

FOOD-
when in rome, be roman!
do not try seafood in the middle of a continent. and def do not try your home cuisine in another country!!! this is a strict no - no! you eat enough indian food in india and will not get anything to match that home food taste, so why spend much more and feel bad later on!
i am a big fan or reviews so would suggest you to research your eating interests online or ask some local guides and only then order food. this always leaves you happy and satisfied!
i am a big foodie and our holidays include dinners and breakfasts at the best of the best the city has to offer.
there are many websites that help you with you food choices with reviews and ratings.

THINGS-TO-DO/ VISIT-
your point of interest - is the main reason for you to choose that particular destination. be it relaxing on the beach or sightseeing or hiking. planning your travel during a good season, staying at a place close to your point(s) of interest and staying close to transport stations help you a great deal with your to-do lists and places to visit.

PACKING-
what to pack - items and weight
packing - now that is a daunting task for most!
here are a few points to keep in mind.
1. always pack light! always!
2. dont dump your clothes, either fold them and lay them or fold and roll them. this saves a lot of space.
3. start planning day wise for the clothes you need.
4. depending on the holiday you are planning, choose your footwear.
5. don't takes clothes you "might" need. you won't!

example:
day one - travel - choose travel clothes - should have pockets and easy to use- dark colours to not get dirty quick.
day two - beach - beach wear, slippers, loose clothes, sunblock and shades.

SOUVENIRS-
this is a must for the people back home and a few for yourself. if buying for others, keep in mind the space it'll take and the decor if in mind. also the fact that you have to carry them back, be sure to keep in mind if they are breakable or large. best is to pick u fridge magnets or other small and long lasting souvenirs.
souvenirs can get you spending way more than you thought depending on the place to plan to pick them up from. best place to buy from is the local town market.
tip: never buy these from the airport. they are expensive there.

Your complete guide to Ko Tao scuba diving & food, Hong night tour and khai Islands

My wife (Kalyani) and I had about a week in hand and decided to head out of India, try something new and visit a few places if time permits.
The new thing chosen was Scuba diving course and the place was Ko Tao, Thailand with Phuket and Bangkok on the way back!!

here is the link to my trip itinerary

Our journey started from New Delhi, India on 29th September 2015 and we were back on 8th October early morning, tanned and sleepy!

After work, we headed to the airport and took the next Indigo flight out to Kolkata, India.
From kolkata we took the night departure to Bangkok, Thailand and arrived there around 2:00 am local time. This gave us enough time to stand in the really long and exhausting queues to get our visa on arrival. This was done by around 3:30 am, then some local food at the airport and a quick nap
while we waited for the next flight to Koh Samui.

We chose the flight over the bus-ferry combo as we wanted to save on travel time.
Our flight was Thai airways to Koh Samui and took around 1:20 Hr to get us there. We then took the Lomprayah ferry services to Ko Tao.

Upon reaching the pier, we had a guy waiting for us who took us straight to the dive shop (mojo divers). Usual cost for taxis there is around 100 thb per person.

Ko Tao -

This places is a heaven for divers and nature lovers. It's a tiny island and the only thing you find here
are dive schools!

Out of the many options we had to choose from, we went ahead with MojoDivers. This school is run my Mohammed and we were extremely happy with the whole course. Our instructor was Virginia who hails from the States and is extremely courteous and professional. The course lasts for 3-4 days which includes 4 open water dives upto 18 m (66ft) deep! We went to Chumphon and Japanese Gardens and wow! What amazing dive sites!!! The life underwater in and around Ko Tao is just sublime!

Our stay was at Bewitched Resort which is on the beach and the rooms are great! This seems like a new place and it's very well situated when it comes to restaurants and shops.
Best area to stay in Ko  Tao is in and around Sairee beach. This has a beach and all the famous eateries and shops are out here. One wouldn't have to wander much to find a good meal or just an
evening pub hop!

Must try in Ko Tao -
Barracuda restaurant - salmon pate and seafood in yellow curry wrapped in a leaf are our absolute favourites!!
Porto Bello - white snapper florentine and Brie cheese golden fried with some salad are our recommendations. Snapper florentine was out of this world!
Through the looking glass - the best breakfast ! Spinach pumpkin puff and the chicken mayo sandwich!
Pancake guy - next to mojo divers this pancake guy sells the tastiest pancakes with all his heart!
Fizz - the good cocktails and the best ambiance!! You sit on bean bags on the beach with lanterns and the music is just right.
Ban's diving resort - great food in general on the seaside. Shrimp tempura, sea food pasta and Thai green
curry, fish and chips. Apt for an afternoon.
farango - great pizza!

On 3rd evening we headed to the pier to take the over night ferry to phuket. This is again a ferry and bus combination and was perfect for us to save time.

This cost us 900 thb per person and the boat had bunk beds to sleep. We were out right after we devoured the sandwiches we picked up from one of the local places.
We reached Surat Thani by around 4:30 am and after about an hour long wait, we got into a mini bus and in 4 hours, we were in Phuket. And trust me, we were missing Ko Tao already!

We were staying in Sole hotel near the infamous Bangla Street. The hotel was booked on booking.com and the link to my review is attached below.
the one street that in a must visit for Phuket is the Bangla road in Patong. its a mini walking street of Phuket which its own share of go go bars and clubs. we went to a few there but none that interesting or worth a mention except Tiger which is huge and a good place to drink a beer or two.

John Gray Hong by starlight tour-

the next day we decided to head for the John Gray's Hongs tour by starlight and boy was it awesome or what!! I'd say the dive course and this were the highlights of the tour. they pick you up around 10 am and take you to the pier from there, you head to the Hongs.
hongs are huge limestone rocks which have natural caves made by the water. one can only go during low tide and you have to lie down on the canoe at times due to the low ceiling. once through the cave, you reach a lagoon! its like an island in an island of untouched unimaginable beauty!
you get on the boat and they serve you lunch and brief you on the plan for the day. then you go to the
2 hongs followed by some free canoe time. then you come back and make your offering to the god.
this is a local custom and the guides do a great job making it. our guide was Dun! he was superb!
after this we headed to the cave again to float our offering. you enjoy the floating decorated candle lit
bouquet along with the many others floating there. once done you pick it up and carry it back to the boat so that the beauty is not spoilt with the "offerings". this is much appreciated by us as this allows
more and more people to come and see these places in its natural, undisturbed form. i request you all to keep it as clean as possible. this ends the tour with a drop back home.

the next day we headed for one of the infamous adult shows they have but again, it was a glorified version of the Bangla street and we were waiting for it to get over. for someone who hasnt been to Phuket or Bangkok, it might be an interesting experience but this wasn't what we were here for specially after the Ko Tao and Hong experience. this was followed by a round of drinks on bangla street and some authentic variety of seafood by the street. the food cost us 500 thb and included a huge variety of crustaceans.

Khai Islands trio tour-
the next day we planned to visit the Khai islands. they are 3 islands near Phuket and are flooded with
tourists. We heard mixed reviews regarding phi phi islands and were told it is more like a swarm of people and vendors on a lovely beach. we chose this tour over phi phi as we were short on time and had to head back to Phuket for our flight. its a decent visit as you can snorkel at these island. Please be reminded that every island you visit on this tour and sit on the chairs, you have to pay 100 thb per chair! It gets annoying after a bit as you are only spotting vendors. one can skip it and you wouldn't have missed anything specially if you have done diving! this cost us 1600 thb each. they picked us
up at 7 am and we were back to the hotel by 2 pm, headed to the airport and took the 8 pm flight to Bangkok for the last leg of our journey.

One night in Bangkok-
we stayed in Icheck Inn which is located in a dark alley but is very close to the sky train and metro
station which is the best way to travel around the city. It is located in Sukhumvit 19 area very close to
terminal 21 mall.
beware of cheating cab drivers : the cab from airport cost us 900 thb and the lady refused to start her
meter, being new, tired and unaware we didn't have much choice.
the rooms are big and the staff is humble and sweet. we headed to the famous roof top restaurants immediately after we checked in. We didn't have much time with us before the places shut down for the night so didn't waste any time and hopped into a cab!
as always trip advisor came to our rescue as we headed to the 2 most rated roof top bars - the sky bar, 64th floor and the vertigo roof top bar, banyan tree.
sky bar is all the more famous from hangover the movie. i personally would rate this the best roof top in Bangkok. the view is insane!! the drinks are expensive comparatively but when you see the ambiance and the feel, it's worth it's! A drink would cost you up words of  500 thb each. do visit this place for the best view that Bangkok can give you.

Shopping Bangkok-
Now this is something everyone wants to do when they hit Bangkok for the first time as they have heard so much about it!
The best place for local shopping is MBK mall. We took a day pass for the sky train and headed there. We assumed we would get down with this place and have time to head somewhere else... Well NO! This place has 5 levels of shops and you would mostly find fakes! Loads a loads of fake Bags,
watches and whatever you can think of! To be honest, we roamed all the 5 floors and the only thing
we ended up buying was souvenirs from the top floor.

IKEA is a place we love and don't have it in India so we had to go there! Sky train and metro is the way to go! We had 2 hours to shop there and we had to head back to the notes, pick up the bags and reach the airport by 11 pm! First thing we did was head to the IKEA cafe! Meat balls! We  love the
lamps they have and ended up increasing my bags by 2 more!

They have a VAT refund form for visitors so make sure you get this signed and stamped before you leave the store.

Getting to the airport for us was a task for 2 reasons: a) the excess bags we had and b) the traffic! We therefore had only one choose to Mae it to the airport on time - take the sky train!
We had to change 2 trains but the main issue we had was with the fact that there are no lifts at the sky train stations except a couple! Now we were on a leg of amazing race with 3 bags each and lots of stairs to climb! We luckily made it to the airport in time and too a sigh of relief!

Swarnabhumi international airport, Bangkok -
Long queues - major issue!
While Kalyani got into the check in queue, I went to the VAT refund office located at the other end of
the terminal. They officer luckily didn't ask me to show the items which were in the check in luggage at the counters but I'd suggest you to take the luggage first to the vat refund office and then proceed with the check in.
After the first security you have to go through the passport control which is another bloody queue jungle! That took us another 20 minutes to get through. After this I went running to the VAT collection booth in the departures terminal around the duty free area. Another freakin queue! This was a long queue with about 75 people in line and there goes the announcement for the final boarding
call for my flight! Unfortunately I couldn't collect the vat which was about 800 thb due to the long queue.
I suggest you to reach the airport at least 3 hours prior to departure in order to do everything peacefully including shop at the duty Free!

We landed back in kolkata by 3:30 am local time and reached New Delhi by 9:00 am thus completing
 our journey.

Would I go back ??

YES!!! But only to Ko Tao for some dives and for the Hongs tour by John Gray.
Rest of the places, I would say are a one time visit.

Getting to Thailand -
There are many airlines that operate to Thailand.

Visa on arrival -
Thailand has visa on arrival for Indians but please remember this process can take around 2-3 hours easily. Make sure u have all your documents in hand before you stand in the line!

Getting to Ko Tao-
From Bangkok, you have a combination option of bus followed by ferry operated by Lomprayah which starts at night around 10 pm and gets you to Ko  Tao around 8 am. This costs around 1200 thb
per person.

The other option is a quicker one but also the more expensive one - flight! Fly to Koh Samui and then take a ferry to Ko Tao which will take about 1:30 to reach oh Tao. Air fares fluctuate but are usually around 3000 to 5000 thb.
